one day soon
on waking up to what was always here
Welcome to your weekly Portal. I hope it finds you in the quiet.
THE THRESHOLD
How much do we take for granted in a single day? We have been taught to look past the present moment toward something better, somewhere else. And so we miss it - the ordinary miracle of being here, alive, held by a world that has never once withdrawn its welcome.
When the stories we have been told about who we are and what the world is begin to loosen their hold, something older and truer quietly takes their place. The ground does not fall away beneath us, instead we feel for the first time how faithfully it has been holding us all along. We see the world that has been hidden in plain sight and rediscover the life that has been waiting, not out there somewhere, but here, in the miracle of our glorious ordinariness.
This week’s poem is a blessing for that awakening. May it find you where you are.
THE POEM
ONE DAY SOON from Reunion Songs One day soon when you wake up and realise all you've been told is a lie, the ground will not fall away beneath you. You will drop to your knees and give thanks for how it catches your every step. You will marvel at the invisible companionship of your breath, how your gaze reveals everything once hidden in plain sight. May you have the courage to face the immensity of your absence. May it unlock your heart and let it be flooded with the infinite welcoming of the here and now. There is a new song being sung. May its music find you and keep you. May you revel and sing in the miracle of your glorious ordinaryness.
THE PRACTICE
The poem speaks of things hiding in plain sight. This week’s practice holds two of them - the invisible companionship of our breath, and the stories we have been told that keep us looking elsewhere.
Three times each day, stop whatever you are doing and take one slow, conscious breath. Marvel at the invisible companionship that has never once left you, not for a single moment of your entire life.
Then, at some point this week, write down one story you have been carrying about who you are or what the world is that no longer feels true. Then explore what feels older and truer in its place. You don’t need to resolve anything. Just name the lie and feel what loosens when you do.
“What has been hidden in plain sight for me is …”
“The story I am ready to put down is …”
“What feels older and truer in its place is …”
THE THREAD
This week, when you find yourself reaching for somewhere better or someone else, pause. Take one breath. Remember, the miracle has never been elsewhere. It has always been here, waiting for your noticing.
Yours in radical hope … Amanda
